Monitoring the microbial diversity in soil, in Uppsala, Sweden

This project was pursued by students from Uppsala University in the course “Independent Project in Molecular Biotechnology“ (Självständigt arbete inom molekylär bioteknologi)

A huge thanks to Lena Henriksson, STUNS life science and especially to the student group for making this possible.

Goal of the project: We want to enable the monitoring of the diversity of Uppsala’s microbiome using the power of the crowd.
The main aim is to make available a set of instructions that would allow the process to be done with limited resources and training. While there are different technologies to do this such as DNA barcoding, we want to make something that most people can do, and that is open to everyone.
A long-term goal is even that you should be able to do it at your garden! This could also help monitor pathogens such as phytophthora, that has been invading many trees in Sweden.

You can view the results of the project in a PDF here.
